I grabbed my phone and wallet along with my knife and slipped everything into the pockets of my jeans.

Then Elaine surprised me when she passed me an LED flashlight no bigger than my middle finger.

“What’s this for?” I twirled the little light in my hand.

“I thought it might come in handy.” She put her hands on her hips and smiled. “A dark shop with no opportunity to turn on the overhead lights without being caught… I think it’s smart to have a source of light other than our phones, if only to make sure to keep some sort of battery charge on them if we need them for anything.”

“Great thinking.” I pocketed the light opposite of my knife.

“I’d offer you a gun, but you know.” Elaine smiled apologetically. “I’ve only got one, unfortunately. In my two years here, the only other time I’ve used it besides tonight is when I go out to the firing range.”

“No offense taken.” I lifted up my wrist. “Untouchable, remember?”

She just laughed and gave me a wide smile.

Damn, she was adorable, and I still had trouble believing that we had just made love on her couch.

After we gathered up our last few belongings, the two of us slipped out of her apartment and back into the quiet halls, and the carpeted floors absorbed our footsteps as we made our way to the elevator.

As I grabbed my things, I wondered if this was the best course of action. I didn’t have any real way of knowing whether or not we were going to run into more mobsters on the way down, and the idea of throwing ourselves intentionally back into trouble didn’t really appeal to me.

“You think it’s going to be safe?” I asked Elaine.

“Breaking into your store?” she asked.

“No, I mean going downstairs right now.” I stopped just before the elevator doors, and my lover stopped along with me. “What if we’re about to walk right back into another trap?”

“Jonah, I don’t want to downplay the situation, but this really wasn’t a subtle fight.” Elaine reached out and clicked the elevator button. “Plenty of folks in the apartments or on the streets heard gunshots and probably called it in. The police were heading to the scene when we ran off in the first place.”

“Huh.” I considered her words for a moment and sighed a little in relief. “It’s probably not in their best interests to send over more guys if the cops are around, then.”

“Not only that, but we also took out three of their men,” the Israeli woman chuckled. “If they’re smart, they’ll take the opportunity to devise a better plan before they send out more people.”

“You’re right,” I agreed. “Maybe there’s nothing to worry about after all.”

“Not now, at least.
